STAGE 01 · PROBLEM

Is the problem real?

CANONICAL PROBLEM

Users face automated, unappealable bans from major platforms (eBay, Amazon) without transparency, explanation, or access to human customer support, leading to permanent loss of account access.

FREQUENCY
Multiple repeated complaints in the post and comments.
INTENSITY
Users explicitly describe existing tools as bloated/overkill and mention workaround behavior.

PAIN TRIGGERS

Accounts are banned permanently with no path to appeal or human review.
Platforms do not provide specific reasons for disabling accounts, citing security or risk policies.

EVIDENCE

Anyone here with an "in" with eBay?

196

No amount of talking or emailing ever got me to a person I could talk to.

comment

You will probably need to just use another account. But that might not be possible. I had my Amazon seller account banned for 15 years. I couldn't sign up for another one without it getting banned too. It was all because a scammer decided they wanted to give me negative feedback and keep the item I sold them (in addition to my refund). No amount of talking or emailing ever got me to a person I could talk to. These companies should be fined/prosecuted for this. As a seller, there should be rules around getting banned and ways to appeal.

STAGE 02 · CUSTOMER

Who feels this pain?

TARGET USERS

dormant or occasional e-commerce buyersIndependent Marketplace Sellers

High-volume e-commerce sellers on platforms like Amazon and eBay seeking to restore locked accounts and recover lost revenue streams.

Context

Reinstate a banned digital account, secure an explanation for the suspension, and get the case reviewed by a human representative.
Backchanneling and seeking internal company contacts or personal networks on public tech forums like Hacker News.
Attempting to circumvent bans by starting a new account from scratch, which often gets linked and re-banned.

Current Workarounds

cold-emailing executive aliases found online
posting public pleas on Hacker News, Reddit, or X hoping for an internal employee to see it
purchasing high-risk 'stealth' accounts that violate TOS

STAGE 03 · MARKET

Where's the gap?

EXISTING SOLUTION GAPS

Platform chat bots and low-level customer service representatives refuse to provide reasons or options for recourse.
Automated moderation systems fail to account for compromised/taken over accounts or malicious buyer behavior.
Alternative accounts are blocked automatically through linked identity verification or device/IP tracking.

What this score means

MonetScope's pipeline rates this opportunity in the top decile of all ideas it has surfaced this quarter, with a validation sub-score of 9/10 against 2 independently sourced evidence signals. A score in this range typically reflects three things converging at once: a high-frequency pain that real users describe in their own words, a willingness-to-pay signal in the underlying discussions, and either a missing or weakly-positioned competitor in the space. None of those guarantees a successful business — execution, distribution, and timing still dominate outcomes — but they do mean the discovery cost (finding a real problem to solve) has been substantially reduced.

Why this matters for Other founders

It sits at the intersection of "automation", "e-commerce", "legal", which makes it relevant to a specific subset of founders rather than a generic horizontal opportunity. Opportunities in this category typically reward founders who can describe the pain in the user's own language — both because that's the basis of effective marketing, and because it's the strongest signal that the founder has done the upfront listening. The MonetScope pipeline surfaces this category alongside other other signals, which is why it appears here rather than in a generic "trending ideas" feed.

Scores are derived from real forum discussions across Reddit, Hacker News and X, weighted by evidence volume and signal quality. How scoring works

Frequently asked questions

Is "BanAppeal: automated legal and executive escalation for locked marketplace accounts" a real validated startup idea or just an AI-generated suggestion?

MonetScope does not generate ideas from a language model's imagination. Every opportunity on this site is anchored to specific source posts and comments from real public discussions — typically on Reddit, Hacker News, or X — where actual users describe the pain in their own words. The AI's role is structuring, scoring, and grouping those signals into a navigable opportunity, not inventing the problem.

How recent is the underlying data for automation?

MonetScope's spider pipeline runs continuously and surfaces opportunities as new evidence accumulates. The "Updated" date in the header reflects the most recent re-scoring of this specific opportunity. Most other opportunities visible in the public catalog draw from discussions in the last 30-60 days; older signals are de-prioritized because user pain shifts faster than most founders assume.

What's the difference between "overall score" and "validation score"?

Overall score is a composite across six dimensions — pain, urgency, willingness to pay, market size, defensibility, and execution ease — designed to give a single number for triage. Validation score is narrower: it asks "how cleanly does the same signal repeat across independent sources?" An opportunity can score high on overall but lower on validation when one or two large discussions dominate the evidence; conversely, validation can be high on a smaller-overall idea where the signal is consistent but the addressable market is modest.
