Sorry that literally none of the replies thus far have sympathised with you. I am 100% feeling the same things. I’m 21 at the end of my masters but I’m lucky enough to have had a few years of software experience already. My first full time role which I began this year is the first where I have actually used LLMs for programming. My job is to talk to Claude. All day, every day. Any minute I am not talking to Claude is a minute wasted. Every minute one of my tmux tabs is waiting for a response is a minute wasted. It’s exhausting and unrewarding. I get to do the hardest parts of the job and none of the satisfying zen of actually coding. I feel no ownership over the finished product, and every day the code base grows or is modified by thousands of lines of code that I’m expected to “review” (read: ask Claude to review and review its review) which pile on an ever increasing mountain of comprehension debt. I don’t write any code, I produce features at light speed, I have some leadership and the best salary I’ve had so far, and I am unfulfilled. I never realised how much programming meant to me. Another commenter jests about becoming a chicken farmer, but I have been seriously considering a pivot completely out of IT. I’m just not sure that a career in this field in the age of AI is appealing to me. I’m sorry I have no better answer for you, all I can do is commiserate. Please let me know if you figure it out.
