CurlSearch: Lightweight CLI for Reliable Programmatic Web Searches
Major search engines block simple curl requests, while alternatives like Searxng are heavy and mediocre for occasional programmatic searches on JS-heavy sites.
Is the problem real?
Major search engines block simple programmatic access like curl, complicating occasional web searches.

"Do any modern websites work with just curl even if they don’t block it - ie without being able to run JS?"
commentCan’t speak for search engines specifically. But I recently had to do a project which required me to crawl the customer’s large site and index it into a vector search for RAG for a call center. My first attempt was to use crawl it just by doing GET requests (ie same thing as using curl). That got me nowhere. I had to use headless Chrome and Playwright. Do any modern websites work with just curl even if they don’t block it - ie without being able to run JS?
Who feels this pain?
TARGET USERS
Programmers who embed 1-10 searches per day or week into scripts, automation, or prototypes without building heavy scraping infrastructure.

EXISTING SOLUTION GAPS
OPPORTUNITY & VALUE
Single thread but multiple complaints on curl blocks, heavy alts, and JS needs; workarounds cluster around simple hacks and paid entry points.
Curl-first interface with zero-setup CLI, optimized for occasional <100/day use unlike heavy enterprise SERP APIs.
A dead-simple CLI tool that proxies curl-compatible requests through a lightweight SaaS backend, bypassing blocks and delivering clean JSON results without setup.
How does it make money?
MONETIZATION
Model
Users already resort to SerpApi's paid tiers beyond free limits and complain about blocks wasting dev time; $9/mo recovers hours spent on workarounds like headless browsers. Signals show tolerance for paid services with free entry.
How do you ship it?
MVP PLAN
“Get reliable search results with curl from anywhere in seconds.”
A dead-simple CLI tool that proxies curl-compatible requests through a lightweight SaaS backend, bypassing blocks and delivering clean JSON results without setup.
Core Features
Weekly Roadmap
- •Build Node.js/Go proxy scraping Google/DDG
- •Parse to standard JSON (title/url/snippet)
- •Rate-limit free tier to 100/day/IP
- •Rust/Go CLI with single binary install
- •Proxy requests to backend endpoint
- •Auth via API key from free signup
- •Add Stripe for $9/mo tier (10k searches)
- •Error handling for blocks/retries
- •Beta test with 20 scripting devs
- •Polish CLI output piping to jq
- •Post to HN/r/programming with demo
- •Monitor signups and free-to-paid rate
Launch on Hacker News, r/programming, r/learnpython with 'curl google "query" | jq' demo GIF.
RISKS & ASSUMPTIONS
Top Risks
Google/DuckDuckGo could strengthen anti-bot measures, breaking the proxy backend reliability central to the value prop.
Heavy users might exhaust free credits quickly, leading to high churn before paid conversion if perceived as bait.
Devs with rare needs (<weekly) may stick to workarounds rather than adding another tool/CLI.
Users on restricted environments may hesitate to install a new binary, preferring pure HTTP APIs.

Generate an investment memoWhat this score means
This idea scores in the upper-middle range of opportunities surfaced by MonetScope, with a validation sub-score of 5/10 against 3 independently sourced evidence signals. A "promising" rating usually indicates a real pain has been detected and discussed in the open, but the pipeline did not find enough signal to flag it as urgent or high-frequency. These opportunities can still produce excellent businesses — they often correspond to "boring" problems that established players have ignored — but the founder should expect a longer customer-development cycle to confirm willingness to pay.
Why this matters for SaaS founders
It sits at the intersection of "api", "automation", "cli-tool", which makes it relevant to a specific subset of founders rather than a generic horizontal opportunity. SaaS opportunities at this stage tend to win on the strength of their initial wedge — a single workflow that the target user runs every week, where the existing solution is either spreadsheets, a clunky incumbent feature, or a manual process they hate. The build cost is moderate; the distribution cost is everything. The MonetScope pipeline surfaces this category alongside other saas signals, which is why it appears here rather than in a generic "trending ideas" feed.

Frequently asked questions
Is "CurlSearch: Lightweight CLI for Reliable Programmatic Web Searches" a real validated startup idea or just an AI-generated suggestion?
MonetScope does not generate ideas from a language model's imagination. Every opportunity on this site is anchored to specific source posts and comments from real public discussions — typically on Reddit, Hacker News, or X — where actual users describe the pain in their own words. The AI's role is structuring, scoring, and grouping those signals into a navigable opportunity, not inventing the problem.
How recent is the underlying data for api?
MonetScope's spider pipeline runs continuously and surfaces opportunities as new evidence accumulates. The "Updated" date in the header reflects the most recent re-scoring of this specific opportunity. Most saas opportunities visible in the public catalog draw from discussions in the last 30-60 days; older signals are de-prioritized because user pain shifts faster than most founders assume.
What's the difference between "overall score" and "validation score"?
Overall score is a composite across six dimensions — pain, urgency, willingness to pay, market size, defensibility, and execution ease — designed to give a single number for triage. Validation score is narrower: it asks "how cleanly does the same signal repeat across independent sources?" An opportunity can score high on overall but lower on validation when one or two large discussions dominate the evidence; conversely, validation can be high on a smaller-overall idea where the signal is consistent but the addressable market is modest.
