comment

I never, ever feel like I have a handle on everything. Still working on that and need to continue building better external systems. But basically, anything we can offload from our brain to the physical world can help. That may look different for everyone. For the phone thing--I also can't put it down at work. "Use more willpower" and "just don't use your phone so much when you have work to do!" are NOT solutions. I also tried app blocking software, and found it too easy to sidestep. My solution: keep my phone 1000 feet away in my locked car, and check it once at lunchtime. The physical distance and time involved helps stop me from casually picking up the phone. It works pretty damn well. For someone else, keeping the phone turned off and inside a backpack might be good enough though. Except for today, when I needed to bring my phone with me. I have now spent over an hour on Reddit when I should be working.

Who feels this pain?

TARGET USERS

adults with ADHDA D H D Adults And Executive Dysfunction Sufferers

Professionals who use productivity tools but still feel overwhelmed and cannot resist phone use due to executive dysfunction, often locking phones in cars as a barrier.

Context

Regain control over daily time management, reduce mental exhaustion and procrastination, and effectively balance work responsibilities with personal goals and side projects.
Keeping phone physically far away (e.g., locked in car) to create a barrier to casual use.
Opting for easy but expensive prepared food instead of cooking due to time and energy depletion.

Current Workarounds

Locking phone in car to create physical barrier to casual use
Using app blockers but easily circumventing them by disabling or uninstalling

STAGE 03 · MARKET

Where's the gap?

EXISTING SOLUTION GAPS

Bullet journals and visual timers do not prevent procrastination or the sensation of constant lateness.
App blockers are easily circumvented, failing to curb impulsive phone usage.
Generic advice like 'just don't use your phone' or 'use more willpower' is ineffective for executive dysfunction.
Non-stimulant medication options are not clearly identified or easily accessible for those who cannot take stimulants.

OPPORTUNITY & VALUE

Why Now

Multiple users report that app blockers are ineffective because they can be intentionally bypassed, and the constant feeling of being overwhelmed persists regardless of productivity tools.

Value Proposition

Unlike software-only blockers, FocusLock uses a physical token to create real-world friction that addresses the executive function gap of impulse control. Designed specifically for the ADHD brain's need for concrete boundaries.

Product Direction

A mobile app that integrates with a physical token (e.g., NFC tag or dedicated button) to enforce focus sessions. To unlock distracting apps, the user must physically interact with the token, which they can place in another room or lock away, creating a deliberate friction barrier against impulsive bypassing.

WILLINGNESS TO PAY

Users already pay for app blockers like Freedom ($6.99/mo) and demonstrate readiness to spend by using expensive prepared food to recoup lost time; a more effective physical intervention justifies $9.99/mo.

RISKS & ASSUMPTIONS

Top Risks

Token inconvenience risk

Users may forget to carry the token or find it annoying, reducing daily use and leading to abandonment.

SEV 3
Bypass through proximity hacking

Tech-savvy users might clone the NFC signal or place the token in range to maintain access, undermining the barrier.

SEV 4
Hardware supply chain complexity

Manufacturing and shipping physical tokens adds cost and logistics delays, especially at small scale.

SEV 3
Niche market size

The target audience of ADHD adults willing to pay for a physical token may be relatively small, limiting growth potential.

What this score means

This opportunity scores well above the median for ideas surfaced by MonetScope, with a validation sub-score of 8/10 against 4 independently sourced evidence signals. A "strong" rating in this band typically means the pain signal is consistent and recurring across multiple discussions, but one of the three pillars (severity, willingness to pay, or competitor weakness) is somewhat softer than top-tier opportunities. Founders evaluating this should focus customer discovery on the softest pillar first — confirming the gap before committing engineering time to a build.

Why this matters for SaaS founders

It sits at the intersection of "adhd", "app-blocker", "executive-dysfunction", which makes it relevant to a specific subset of founders rather than a generic horizontal opportunity. SaaS opportunities at this stage tend to win on the strength of their initial wedge — a single workflow that the target user runs every week, where the existing solution is either spreadsheets, a clunky incumbent feature, or a manual process they hate. The build cost is moderate; the distribution cost is everything. The MonetScope pipeline surfaces this category alongside other saas signals, which is why it appears here rather than in a generic "trending ideas" feed.

Scores are derived from real forum discussions across Reddit, Hacker News and X, weighted by evidence volume and signal quality. How scoring works

Frequently asked questions

Is "FocusLock: Physical Token App Blocker for ADHD Professionals" a real validated startup idea or just an AI-generated suggestion?

MonetScope does not generate ideas from a language model's imagination. Every opportunity on this site is anchored to specific source posts and comments from real public discussions — typically on Reddit, Hacker News, or X — where actual users describe the pain in their own words. The AI's role is structuring, scoring, and grouping those signals into a navigable opportunity, not inventing the problem.

How recent is the underlying data for adhd?

MonetScope's spider pipeline runs continuously and surfaces opportunities as new evidence accumulates. The "Updated" date in the header reflects the most recent re-scoring of this specific opportunity. Most saas opportunities visible in the public catalog draw from discussions in the last 30-60 days; older signals are de-prioritized because user pain shifts faster than most founders assume.

What's the difference between "overall score" and "validation score"?

Overall score is a composite across six dimensions — pain, urgency, willingness to pay, market size, defensibility, and execution ease — designed to give a single number for triage. Validation score is narrower: it asks "how cleanly does the same signal repeat across independent sources?" An opportunity can score high on overall but lower on validation when one or two large discussions dominate the evidence; conversely, validation can be high on a smaller-overall idea where the signal is consistent but the addressable market is modest.
