LeaseClean: Automated IFRS 16 Adjustment & Real Cash-Flow Reporting

IFRS 16 lease accounting rules create massive administrative overhead and obscure true ongoing cash costs by splitting rental expenses into separate depreciation and interest lines, resulting in uninformative balance sheets for companies where leases aren't a core operational risk.

STAGE 01 · PROBLEM

Is the problem real?

CANONICAL PROBLEM

IFRS 16 lease accounting rules introduce excessive administrative complexity, obscure true ongoing costs across depreciation and interest lines, and generate uninformative balance sheet figures for companies where leases are not a primary operational risk.

FREQUENCY
Multiple repeated complaints in the post and comments.
INTENSITY
Users explicitly describe existing tools as bloated/overkill and mention workaround behavior.

PAIN TRIGGERS

IFRS 16 creates massive administrative overhead and complex compliance work with little to no actual improvement in financial statement utility for most companies.
Right-of-use assets and lease liabilities distort the balance sheet and do not reflect true realizable value or intuitive financial health.

EVIDENCE

IFRS 16 is ridiculous and makes financial statements much less useful. Agree or disagree?

It creates additional work for zero benefit.

comment

IFRS 16 is a clear indication the IASB have too much time on their hands and need to play more golf. It creates additional work for zero benefit. A cynic might say that 16 is a make work standard for audit firms. I've never been happier to work for a small company that doesn't have to worry about nonsense like this.

The balance sheet figures are essentially made up nonsense numbers.

comment

I've audited a business where leases were a significant part of their operations, they had about £250m of ROU assets and liabilities for about the same revenue. They'd have lots of contract modifications, the assets were long life and the lease would be extended every 3 years or so. Back in 2022 when interest rates shot up from essentially zero to 5%, all of their leases that extended had to be revised using a discount rate at the modification date. What this meant RoU assets and lease liabilities shot up significantly during that year. To me it just seems overly complicated, how does that add any value to someone reading the financial statements? The balance sheet figures are essentially made up nonsense numbers.

Manually reversing out IFRS 16 adjustments when conducting financial analysis or evaluations.
Ignoring EBITDA and standard lease-distorted metrics in favor of cash flow statements or operating income.

Current Workarounds

Manually reversing IFRS 16 adjustments in Excel for internal management reporting
Ignoring distorted EBITDA and operating income metrics in favor of raw cash flow statements
Relying on expensive external audit consultants to untangle right-of-use asset modifications

STAGE 03 · MARKET

Where's the gap?

EXISTING SOLUTION GAPS

Accounting standards apply blunt, universal rules rather than industry-specific frameworks, imposing heavy administrative burdens on companies where leases are a minor cost base.
Financial reporting standards hide actual recurring rental cash outflows by splitting them into separate depreciation and interest line items.

What this score means

This opportunity scores well above the median for ideas surfaced by MonetScope, with a validation sub-score of 9/10 against 3 independently sourced evidence signals. A "strong" rating in this band typically means the pain signal is consistent and recurring across multiple discussions, but one of the three pillars (severity, willingness to pay, or competitor weakness) is somewhat softer than top-tier opportunities. Founders evaluating this should focus customer discovery on the softest pillar first — confirming the gap before committing engineering time to a build.

Why this matters for SaaS founders

It sits at the intersection of "accounting", "automation", "compliance", which makes it relevant to a specific subset of founders rather than a generic horizontal opportunity. SaaS opportunities at this stage tend to win on the strength of their initial wedge — a single workflow that the target user runs every week, where the existing solution is either spreadsheets, a clunky incumbent feature, or a manual process they hate. The build cost is moderate; the distribution cost is everything. The MonetScope pipeline surfaces this category alongside other saas signals, which is why it appears here rather than in a generic "trending ideas" feed.

Scores are derived from real forum discussions across Reddit, Hacker News and X, weighted by evidence volume and signal quality. How scoring works

Frequently asked questions

Is "LeaseClean: Automated IFRS 16 Adjustment & Real Cash-Flow Reporting" a real validated startup idea or just an AI-generated suggestion?

MonetScope does not generate ideas from a language model's imagination. Every opportunity on this site is anchored to specific source posts and comments from real public discussions — typically on Reddit, Hacker News, or X — where actual users describe the pain in their own words. The AI's role is structuring, scoring, and grouping those signals into a navigable opportunity, not inventing the problem.

How recent is the underlying data for accounting?

MonetScope's spider pipeline runs continuously and surfaces opportunities as new evidence accumulates. The "Updated" date in the header reflects the most recent re-scoring of this specific opportunity. Most saas opportunities visible in the public catalog draw from discussions in the last 30-60 days; older signals are de-prioritized because user pain shifts faster than most founders assume.

What's the difference between "overall score" and "validation score"?

Overall score is a composite across six dimensions — pain, urgency, willingness to pay, market size, defensibility, and execution ease — designed to give a single number for triage. Validation score is narrower: it asks "how cleanly does the same signal repeat across independent sources?" An opportunity can score high on overall but lower on validation when one or two large discussions dominate the evidence; conversely, validation can be high on a smaller-overall idea where the signal is consistent but the addressable market is modest.
