Ontario TeachPath: Pre-Enrollment QECO Calculator and Subject Demand Planner

Prospective career changers risk massive income loss and prolonged underemployment due to a total lack of pre-enrollment transparency around localized, subject-specific teacher saturation (e.g., oversupplied Biology vs. high-demand Physics) and highly confusing QECO salary grid rules for non-traditional degrees.

STAGE 01 · PROBLEM

Is the problem real?

CANONICAL PROBLEM

Prospective career changers into Ontario's education system face a high risk of lost income and prolonged underemployment due to a lack of clear transparency regarding local subject-specific teaching demand and complex pay scale (QECO) evaluations.

FREQUENCY
Multiple repeated complaints in the post and comments.
INTENSITY
Users explicitly describe existing tools as bloated/overkill and mention workaround behavior.

PAIN TRIGGERS

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) public school board job market is oversaturated, forcing new teachers into precarious temporary roles (supply/LTO) rather than permanent contracts.
Biology and General Science are mistakenly perceived as high-demand STEM fields, when they are actually heavily saturated compared to Chemistry, Physics, or Math.
The QECO pay categorization rules are convoluted and highly restrictive for individuals with non-traditional academic paths, such as 3-year undergraduate degrees or professional clinical doctorates.

EVIDENCE

Chiropractor in Toronto pivoting to High School teaching. Is the STEM shortage real or will I struggle to get hired?

Biology and general science are not in demand. Do you have enough credits in chemistry? Or better yet, physics? What about math?

comment

Biology and general science are not in demand. Do you have enough credits in chemistry? Or better yet, physics? What about math? Those are all much more in demand. You might also qualify for the health care technology teachable which is in demand in some places, too. Regardless of your teachables, you’ll still have to OT and work LTOs for some time before landing a permanent contract. This will be less time if you qualify for the more in demand teachables, but if you’re set on working in the GTA you’ll still have to OT and do LTOs. I suspect this will get worse with the double cohort of teacher’s college grads graduating in 2028. For QECO, the three year undergrad makes it tricky. And I’m not sure the Doctor of Chiropractic counts as an acceptable “master’s of doctoral degree”. You might have to do some AQs or an honours specialist.

Crowdsourcing highly localized hiring market and salary grid data on community forums before committing to an expensive and time-consuming professional degree.

Current Workarounds

Posting detailed transcript summaries on community subreddits like r/CanadianTeachers to crowd-source estimates
Manually reading through dense, official QECO regulation PDFs to self-assess salary grids
Relying on generic university marketing materials regarding generic 'STEM shortages'

STAGE 03 · MARKET

Where's the gap?

EXISTING SOLUTION GAPS

General narratives around a 'STEM shortage' fail to differentiate between saturated subjects like biology and high-demand subjects like physics and math.
Official QECO guidelines or university admissions lack intuitive, pre-enrollment evaluation tools that explicitly calculate salary placement for non-traditional professional degrees.

OPPORTUNITY & VALUE

Why Now

Repeated clear emphasis on the fact that general narratives about a 'STEM shortage' fail to accurately distinguish between highly saturated subjects like biology and actual high-demand fields like math/physics in the GTA.

Value Proposition

Unlike official QECO evaluations or university admissions which only assess candidates *after* enrollment or graduation, this provides definitive, pre-commitment financial and career risk clarity for career switchers.

Product Direction

A specialized evaluation platform where prospective Ontario teachers input their degree history, credit count, and clinical qualifications to instantly calculate an estimated QECO salary category alongside a highly localized, data-backed subject demand forecast for GTA school boards.

RISKS & ASSUMPTIONS

Top Risks

Liability for incorrect QECO estimates

If a user relies on an estimated category to switch careers and later receives a lower official rating, they may blame the platform. Clear legal disclaimers are essential.

SEV 4
Low repeat purchase rate

Since career switching is a one-time event, the tool has a naturally high churn rate, requiring continuous acquisition of top-of-funnel leads.

SEV 3
Opaque school board data sources

Gathering real-time surplus and high-demand subject data across multiple individual GTA school boards requires manual tracking or continuous scraping of public job boards.

What this score means

This idea scores in the upper-middle range of opportunities surfaced by MonetScope, with a validation sub-score of 8/10 against 2 independently sourced evidence signals. A "promising" rating usually indicates a real pain has been detected and discussed in the open, but the pipeline did not find enough signal to flag it as urgent or high-frequency. These opportunities can still produce excellent businesses — they often correspond to "boring" problems that established players have ignored — but the founder should expect a longer customer-development cycle to confirm willingness to pay.

Why this matters for Other founders

It sits at the intersection of "analytics", "career-change", "data-management", which makes it relevant to a specific subset of founders rather than a generic horizontal opportunity. Opportunities in this category typically reward founders who can describe the pain in the user's own language — both because that's the basis of effective marketing, and because it's the strongest signal that the founder has done the upfront listening. The MonetScope pipeline surfaces this category alongside other other signals, which is why it appears here rather than in a generic "trending ideas" feed.

Scores are derived from real forum discussions across Reddit, Hacker News and X, weighted by evidence volume and signal quality. How scoring works

Frequently asked questions

Is "Ontario TeachPath: Pre-Enrollment QECO Calculator and Subject Demand Planner" a real validated startup idea or just an AI-generated suggestion?

MonetScope does not generate ideas from a language model's imagination. Every opportunity on this site is anchored to specific source posts and comments from real public discussions — typically on Reddit, Hacker News, or X — where actual users describe the pain in their own words. The AI's role is structuring, scoring, and grouping those signals into a navigable opportunity, not inventing the problem.

How recent is the underlying data for analytics?

MonetScope's spider pipeline runs continuously and surfaces opportunities as new evidence accumulates. The "Updated" date in the header reflects the most recent re-scoring of this specific opportunity. Most other opportunities visible in the public catalog draw from discussions in the last 30-60 days; older signals are de-prioritized because user pain shifts faster than most founders assume.

What's the difference between "overall score" and "validation score"?

Overall score is a composite across six dimensions — pain, urgency, willingness to pay, market size, defensibility, and execution ease — designed to give a single number for triage. Validation score is narrower: it asks "how cleanly does the same signal repeat across independent sources?" An opportunity can score high on overall but lower on validation when one or two large discussions dominate the evidence; conversely, validation can be high on a smaller-overall idea where the signal is consistent but the addressable market is modest.
