The thing is that free software kind of lost the fight simply because people aren't interested in software products, they are interested in those SaaS one size fits all solutions with different subscription tiers. My employer for example would say LibreOffice is preferable to the MS Office suites from before Office 365 and the Google suite now but with Google Docs you'd now also get cloud storage, AI document generation tools, AI search assistants (like NotebookLM), easily shared templates, hyperlinks to specific places in a document, interaction between meets, calendar, contacts, drive and so on all within your spreadsheets and docs. And yeah, LibreOffice doesn't do that, and yeah, I can understand if a manager in a corporate environment who isn't a tech nerd just wants the AIO solution that works even if it's like 10 bucks a month per user. Meanwhile MS, Google and so on are interested in the open source or even FOSS/libre software just for one reason: how to use them in order to offer such software services as described above. Don't forget that for example Microsoft is the biggest contributor to Linux and that Linux powers Azure. That's not really a win for free software, it's rather a leash on free software so that corporations may use it to offer their services more cheaply.
