the habit that fixed flat for me as a non designer is, whatever text is on a slide, delete half of it and say the rest out loud. the slide is the backdrop, not the handout, so one big number or one six word line reads way less forgettable than a bullet list. two more cheap ones, put a single full bleed photo behind the words instead of clipart, and pick exactly two colors by eyedropping your own logo so nothing looks like a default template. last check is the squint test, if you blur your eyes and can't tell what a slide is about in a second, the size hierarchy is off, not the content.
