Yeah me. I operate in quite a small niche, producing low-volume (typically <1000) electronic products. It’s rewarding but mentally very tiring as I need to do the embedded software, circuit design, hardware and mechanical design, all myself. Then there’s the compliance testing, packaging design, documentation etc. It’s a constant learning exercise and at my age (60) my brain doesn’t work as well as it used to. I aim to minimise the time spent assembling production hardware. The first 25 to 50 “pre-production” units are largely made in-house as I adjust and confirm the design before I place orders for CNC machining, wiring loom assemblies etc, laser cutting, 3D print plastic parts etc. The biggest challenge is not really making a working product, it’s designing it so I can just buy in the sub-assemblies at a reasonable cost and spend only minutes per part doing final assembly and test. I’ve still got all the business stuff to do too. Sometimes it feels overwhelming. But I get a buzz out of it too - I see my stuff being sold around the world by the retailers and know that it’s all my own work.
