Obvs as a teen I didn’t understand what was going on mentally (AuDHD, questionable home life, constant anxiety) so the anxiety of not getting it overran any ability I’d have to work through the memory issues with support, just felt stupid and panicked. A couple years later, Calc1 was better because I had the kindest instructor who was super encouraging, so by calc 2 (?) when the trig identities came back I had built up enough self confidence to tackle them again but man that was rough. I’d never really connected the dots on why I found that so hard, thank you for this.

I did a course on neural networks a while back. Much of the math and the ideas were actually straightforward, just explained in the most convoluted way possible. Too much Greek letters and indexes all over. I couldn’t keep in mind what each letter meant, not even the names of the letters. So, trying to understand an algorithm went like this: “Squiggle equals sum sum sum of squiggle squiggle squiggle squiggle with a few indexes on top and bottom of each.” Totally incomprehensible. When I found the same thing written in program code with meaningful variable names it was easy to understand.
